Our support groups bring together people who are going through, or have already gone through, the experience of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, navigating the many treatment options, and managing the different chronic side effects that may accompany treatment. They provide an opportunity for individuals, and their support people or partners, to share their personal experiences and thoughts and to receive emotional support from others in the group. Many groups also offer educational opportunities by inviting guest speakers, including healthcare professionals, counsellors, researchers, and others, to speak on topics related to prostate cancer treatment, research, and coping.
Being part of a support group offers many benefits to the individuals who partake. For some, support groups fill the gap between medical care and the need for expanded emotional support. For others, support groups are a safe place where they can get practical feedback about their treatment options. But most importantly, support groups are a powerful way to learn through collective experience and gain a sense of empowerment over living with prostate cancer.
